Patient Transfer Officer (PTO)

The SA Ambulance Service Patient Transfer Officer (PTO) position responds to requests for non-emergency care and transportation of patients ensuring that appropriate standards of customer service and patient care are maintained.

PTO's apply appropriate treatment pathways for patients whilst in transit to ensure that positive clinical outcomes are achieved. PTO's work closely with key stakeholders including hospital staff and nursing home personnel to ensure that patients requiring transportation receive the highest level of service.

As a PTO you will be able to use your knowledge of the resources available to ensure the appropriate treatment of the patient. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, utilising your effective communication skills, both written and verbal. You will also use your skills in critical thinking and problem solving to support appropriate patient care. Under the direction of Operations Management, you may also provide support to Emergency crews when required.

Your sound interpersonal and communication skills will equip you to relate effectively to people from different cultures, backgrounds and circumstances; and you will be committed to using discretion and maintaining strict confidentiality at all times.

Mandatory selection criteria
To be considered for a PTO position, you must meet the following pre-employment and selection criteria:

  • Able to provide a DHS Child Related Screening Check and National Police Check (General Probity & Vulnerable Persons) prior to commencement
  • Hold a driver's licence that does not legally restrict your ability to drive an operational ambulance
  • Be able to complete a Cert IV in Health Care (Ambulance) which is supported and paid for by SA Ambulance Service
  • Medical and functional testing; as well as verbal, numeric and abstract reasoning assessments designed to assess your reasoning skills

PTO shifts are mostly Monday - Friday with a few shifts on weekends. Shifts start times range from 0700 to 1630, all 8.5 hours with half hour lunch break. The roster configuration will be dependent on what station you are rostered to.
