Dental Assistant Traineeships

Dental Assistant Traineeships provide a 12 month program commencing each year in February. They incorporate on the job training under supervision to develop the competency and skills required of a qualified Dental Assistant, in addition participants also undertake the Certificate III in Dental Assisting at TafeSA. At the completion of the program, the trainee should be able to demonstrate the skills required of qualified Dental Assistant with minimal supervision.

Trainee Dental Assistants assist the dental operator with the treatment of clients, mixing of materials, maintaining the cleanliness and infection control standards required in the clinic area, developing and mounting of x-rays, cleaning of instruments and equipment and providing information to clients as directed by the dental operator. General administrative tasks may include greeting and meeting clients, making appointments, answering telephone calls and entering patient details into records.

This traineeship involves working closely with dental operators and their clients. Communication skills and a willingness to learn about and assist in the oral health management of clients are essential. At the completion of the 12 month training program, Dental Assistant Trainees will have developed skills to enable them to work in a diverse range of environments such as general and specialty areas, teaching clinics and aged care.

Traineeship eligibility
If you're aged between 17 and 24, and you're a resident of South Australia, or, if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander aged 17 to 30, and a resident of South Australia, then you're eligible to apply for a traineeship.

Recruitment timeframes
SA Dental Service recruits for the Dental Assistant Traineeships positions once per year, the timeframe for the recruitment process is listed below:


 September 2017

  • The traineeship advert for the 2018 intake will be online for 3 weeks on the SA Health Careers website commencing 1 September 2017
  • The application link will be included under Current Vacancies during that time
  • Applications must be lodged online and close on 22 September 2017

 

 Mid October 2017

  • Testing of applicants

 

 Late October 2017

  • Interviews conducted for shortlisted applicants 

 

 Early November

  • Offers made
  • Pre-employment paperwork and mandatory checks undertaken

 

 Wed 7 February 2018

  • 2018 group commences their 12month Dental Assistant Traineeships program
